What should be all too obvious is the fact that what you put into your intestines determines their health and disease – from the top to the bottom. Yet the medical profession largely ignores a person's diet, and instead considers problems of the digestive system to be deep, dark mysteries in need of pills. Problems from esophageal reflux to constipation are easily cured by filling the intestines with the right foods and this means a change to the McDougall Program. There are some helpful modifications to the diet, like no fruit juice and onions for indigestion troubles, and additional flaxseed for constipation. Prescription and over-the-counter medications are largely used to treat symptoms – once the pain is gone these drugs can be stopped.
