The McDougall Program is all about gaining freedom from medical businesses and having control over your future health. These goals are accomplished by participants stopping all unnecessary medications, avoiding surgery, and regaining their lost health and appearance. Sick people see doctors, healthy people don't. Medical care is provided to each participant personally by John McDougall, MD. Attending this program is the only way to become a patient of Dr. McDougall. There are no gimmicks here—the results come simply from a very nutritious diet, exercise, improving daily habits, and stopping medications with their unpleasant side effects. Unfortunately, these changes are not easily accomplished by people on their own; so the 10-day program is designed to help them do exactly that.

Most people tell Dr. McDougall that in less than 10 days they feel better than they have in years (See Comments). Our patients' average weight loss is 4 pounds (2 Kg) in 7 days—that's half a pound a day—while eating unlimited amounts of delicious foods, served buffet-style. Most (over 90%) people are able to stop their medications for hypertension, type-2 diabetes, arthritis, indigestion, and constipation. Those who must stay on medications are often able to switch to simpler, safer, more effective, and less expensive ones. Another important objective is for participants to understand their health problems and how to resolve them. For those patients who are interested, this part of the education often goes deeply into basic and current medical research.

People worry that their own private doctor will be upset if they stop their drugs—they shouldn't be; after all, sick people take drugs—healthy people don't. Besides, Dr. McDougall personally expends every effort to help people make a smooth transition back to their private doctor and the "real" medical world—and when appropriate, he is happy to talk to their own local doctor.

John and Mary McDougall are at the clinic every day, for almost every meal. This clinic experience focuses on the practical, with the primary goal of people continuing the program long after they leave. Mary McDougall takes people shopping for foods at the markets and out to lunch at local restaurants, twice.
