Last night was my last night in Nebraska. Today I should be headed into Colorado. This is also my last week with my spring/summer/fall gear. It’s time to upgrade for colder weather – at least through the Rockies. I’m meeting my sister in Denver on Monday. She’s bringing my snow shoes and other winter gear. I’ll be trading in my ultra lightweight tarp tent for a heavy duty Mountain Hardware Tent. At nearly six pounds it weighs five times as much as the 19oz tent I’ve been using. But if I’m going to be hiking through the Rockies in the fall, I need to have the right gear. I’m also upgrading my jacket, gloves, socks, sleeping pad and sleeping bag. It’s going to add nearly 15 pounds to the weight of my pack which I’m also upgrading to a pack designed to carry a little more weight. Now I just have to hope for good weather.

The highlights of my walk yesterday included Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, Lake McConaughy and Ash Hollow State Historical Park. Here are a few snaps.

From Nebraska, the ADT crosses the eastern plains of Colorado along the South Platte River, climbing from 3,448 feet to 5,280 feet over a distance of 241 miles. The route uses mostly county and state roads through the pastoral countryside.

I’ve included maps of the entire ADT, the Colorado portion of the ADT, and I’ve got a map of the 19 mile South Platte River Trail that I was on yesterday. I’m coming into Denver from the northern route in Nebraska.

Yesterday I passed through Julesburg. Julesburg, established in 1859 as a trading post by Jules Beni, a French trader, was an important stop even before Ben Holladay created the Overland Trail. Since it was strategically located at a junction point of the Upper California Crossing and on the south banks of the South Platte River, it saw a tremendous amount of activity. The trail forked at this point: one went north and followed the North Platte Valley on through South Pass, and on to California and Oregon. The southern trail followed the South Platte River to the burgeoning settlement of Denver. For a short period to time, Julesburg served as a stage station for the Leavenworth and Pikes Peak Express as well as the eastern terminus of the Pony Express division that extended westward to the Sweetwater River in Wyoming. Julesburg was quite a settlement consisting of a number of buildings all constructed of hewn logs. It is reported to have had a telegraph office, a store, blacksmith shop, warehouse, stables, and homesteader's cabins, in addition to the Overland Stage Station building.

There was also a billiard saloon, said to have sold the "Vilest of liquor at two bits a glass." Julesburg had become a rendezvous for gamblers, horse thieves and desperados--with Jules Beni leading the pack. Jules had turned his trading post into a hotbed of wild times, loose women and the unfair treatment of travelers.

When Ben Holladay took over the mail route, Jules Beni was fired by Jack Slade, who was the Division Agent for this portion of the route. The name of Julesburg was also changed by Holladay to "Overland City" in hopes to change the town's image, that of being the toughest town west of the Missouri River, but the name just didn't stick. Even though the town itself was moved several times over the years, the name remains Julesburg.

Between January and February of 1865, Julesburg and the Overland Trail was repeatedly attacked by Indians. They not only burned twelve ranches, destroyed 100 tons of hay and attacked a wagon train consisting of over 20 wagons, they totally destroyed all the buildings at Julesburg, and destroyed about 75 miles of telegraph line to the west. The burning of this station was the greatest financial loss of any station on the stage line. Nothing was spared. Holladay reported to Congress losses of $35,000 for buildings, $1500 for hay, $78,000 for 3500 sacks of corn, provisions for $2000, for a total of about $115,000.

It’s going to get cold tonight. Low of 27° with a chance of light snow. Then it should warm up again until Wednesday. I’ve been walking a lot of back roads past ranches with cows dotting the hillsides. The fun thing for yesterday coming across a group of hot air balloons just a couple miles outside of Greeley. I stopped and had a cup of tea and watched them taking off for nearly an hour. There was a small drama with a mom, dad, and two boys about 7 or 8. It appeared that dad was going up with the two boys, but then one of the boys started crying hysterically and so he was pulled back out of the basket and into mom’s arms. I couldn’t hear what they were saying but after he got out of the basket it appeared that dad was attempting to coax him back while mom seemed OK with him staying on the ground. In the end, Dad lifted off with just one of the boys. Here are some snaps I took.

I shared a room last night at the Westin with my sister Tracy and my best friend Janice. Tracy brought all my winter gear and I gave her all my spring/summer/fall gear to haul back home to Indianapolis. I’m so lucky to have my friends and family to support me on this journey. The best news is that Janice is going to walk with me to Grand Junction. I’m am so thrilled to have some company. We went to the REI in Denver to get Janice a pair of ultralite snow shoes (just in case). Then we had dinner (potatoes and salad for me) in the hotel dining room before heading back to the room to study maps and organize our gear.

It’s clear and 41 degrees in Denver this morning and I expect fair weather for hiking today. But tomorrow and Thursday we’ve got some weather systems moving in that could bring some snow.

In this segment, the ADT starts at 5,317 feet and climbs over the foothills of the Rockies into the high alpine country to cross seven passes, four of which are over 12,000 feet high. The highest point on the ADT is at Argentine Pass (13,207 feet) on the Continental Divide. My goal is to make it to Leadville today, which at 10,188 is the highest town on the American Discovery Trail. Let’s hope the altitude doesn’t slow us down too much.

Here is a couple of snaps from the Denver REI including their interior rock climb.

Hi Garbanzo,

I was a sloth on Saturday, so, to try to make up the time I did a split session on Monday. I went up a trail I used to run that rises above our little bedroom community. There was a light fog, and the shorter days had me up there just as the lights were going on in the suburban houses. It was very pretty and I would never have done it if I wasn't participating in your project here, so thank you for that.

starting 10/22
Thursday fisherman's wharf up mason over columbus -38 minutes OK, slow, but nice memories of joggin with DT
Friday - Pac Bell - China Basin up 4th - 38.5 minutes
Saturday - nill
Sunday - Swim - 50 laps no rest stops 38.5 minutes
MOnday - noon -aquatic park - 46 mionutes - yeah, I know it's embarassing, but sometimes, when you've let yourself get out of shape, embarassing is all you have to work with.
evening San Pedro park - 30 minutes
Tuesday - Pier 39 up Stockton to Columbus - 38 minutes
Wednesday - China basin up 4th - 41 minutes

total - 270 minutes

Have a great week on the trail!

Mark

Hi Mark,
Thanks for posting your exercise this week. Now for everyone else.

Reminder: Please post your exercise minutes/miles tomorrow, Thursday. Thanks.

I’m snowed in. :( We could get up to 2 feet of snow in the next two days so I’m hold up at the Delaware Hotel here in Leadville. Luckily I have Janice to keep me company. I’m not quite going to make my scheduled miles this week, but I’ll make them up next week. We’re hoping to get back on the trial on Friday or Saturday depending on conditions. In the meantime we’ve been wandering around Leadville in the snow. Here are a few snaps. Some Aspen trees on the Colorado trail yesterday before it started snowing and then some snow shots from this morning.

I managed 350 minutes this week. Rain, rain, and more rain limited my time outdoors.

Hi Garbanzo! I'm reporting for four people.

JuJuBee in CA did 670 minutes this week.

The other three of us did 630 minutes of daily evening walking.

I did 60 minutes of rebounding.

670 + 630 + 60 = 1360 minutes TOTAL

Stay warm!

Hi. I walked 6 miles this week. We live right on the borderline between oak chaparral and redwood forest. On our walk, we go up the mountain from chaparral to forest. There are two trees that are turning color here, the maples and the black oak. Most of the leaves are still green, and about half of the yellow leaves are still on the trees. Also the poison oak is bright red. Most of the trees stay green year around.

Happy Trails!

Sat: 30 min neighborhood walk
Sun: 20 min hauling punkins
Mon: none...mildly achey
