Hello everyone. I am wondering what you guys eat at work for snacks.

I am finding I fall off McD a lot because I am starving and don't know what to have for snacks. Sometimes my job can be physical and draining and fruit is not keeping up with my needs, and when you only have 15 minutes to eat a snack it makes me wonder what others are doing. Thank you. :)

when i need crack, i turn to dried mango's with no added sugar & sourdough fat free pretzels. If you need to put 1000 calories into your brain in a short amount of time, those are my goto's

I'm the same as you... I have to snack on something hearty... Fruit doesn't give me much staying power! I enjoy:

- plain whole wheat pita or roll, or with a smudge of humus
- spoon sized shredded wheat cereal (no sugar or salt added)
- banana
- Ryvita crackers w humus
- cold cooked new potatoes

Cold Sweet potatoes in the skin. Cooked in crockpot, baked, or grilled.

Canned chickpeas.

Canned fruit (in juice, no sugar added). The smaller size cans with the pull off top.

Cold cooked taters are my go-to snack. Yukon golds work best for this IMO. I just eat them like apples. Yummy, filling, and satisfying!

Please keep more snack ideas coming. I use fruits and now added Sweet potato to the portfolio and glad I added SP. Someone mentioned chickpeas. I will give that a try. I don't like to buy canned one due to salt content.

We soak peas at home and then cook it with spices in Indian style, I was wondering if you could just grab soaked chickpeas and use that as snack? This could be very filling.

I'm sure there are more cool snack ideas out there. Just get it out folks!

You need to discover Eden Foods. Canned, no-salt added beans of all varieties! Many stores carry them--you can also get at vitacost.com w/ no shipping charge.

We get 5-6 different variety of beans from Indian grocery store. It is much cheaper to buy them in bulk and use it fresh.

My favorite snack almost everyday is an apple with "earth balance" natural peanut butter, very yummy and very filling. I also carry baggies with different varieties of snack crackers like "back to nature" multi-seed gluten free rice thins. Other ideas are making a pot of red potatoes, mash them up with some almond milk and make the brown gravy from the starch solution book, mix in some zuccini or steamed broccoli... I love it. I haven't been super hungry for anything since I started cooking and eating from that book. Good luck to you and hang in there :D

whole foods has zero fat baked woven wheat thins that are great, too. (salty however) but if your store has zero fat hummus from cedars or oasis foods then combine the two and its heaven.

Make a big batch of snack bars. They freeze really well and you can grab one every morning on your way out the door. They will be thawed come snack time.

I use whole oats. I probably use 12 cups or so but I don't measure.

Add to that anything "wet" that appeals to you until the oats are damp and stick together. I've used canned pumpkin, applesauce, bananas, or any frozen fruit pureed (cherries and blueberries are a favorite here). You can add some spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and all spice go good with the pumpkin. Cinnamon goes well with everything else.

Mix it up, press it into a parchment lined pan, bake until firm (350 for about 30 minutes). Remove from parchment, let cool completely, slice, and freeze. We take these anytime we feel we may need a snack. They have saved all of us from grabbing something bad and they are very filling.

I think when I'm at home I have a routine for snacks as mentioned above. Fruits and Sweet Potatoes. I will be traveling to California for 2 weeks for business related work. For sweet potato you need at least Microwave. Not sure whether my hotel room wil have one.

In such circumstances what would you recommend? I know I can always stop by and stock on fruits? what else would you recommend from whole foods market? I know ET mentioned canned beans which will come handy when you are traveling.

if you're going to be in CA there probably will be a whole foods nearby - mcdougalls instant soups with 1/2 the spices to cut down on the salt are a good bet.

A great way to eat chickpeas is to season to your liking and then spread on a pan (with a lip or they all will roll off!!) Roast in oven at 275 til they are nice and crunchy. Shake pan to turn them occasionally, they are ready to come out when they reach the "crunchiness" you desire (I like mine quite brown, overdone by some standards). Just make sure you bring a measured amount with you, as it is very easy to overeat these if you have a bagful. ;-)
