Hi everyone, I have few Questions about food products and to use. I order some of Dr.McDougall's book but did not receive it yet and don't want to wait before changing my eating habits.

1. What can I use to sweeten Oats? I have eaten it without any sweetness and find it not very pleasing. I Don't use artificial sweetness and bought a "Sugar" free syrup but in the ingredients it has Aspartime. :?:

2. I need to loose weight and so no bread, but what about the Whole Grain Fitness Bread from delta Backbetrieb, it is a product from Germany. It contains basically whole grains, kernel, sunflower send, whole oat flower and wheat germ. Is this ok to eat?

3. I was looking for a substitute to use over potatoes and in one of the previous discussions some McD friends said to use vegetable stock. This idea sounds good to me. Is this the small tablet stock from products like Maggi? In the Nutritional info it says that is contains fat (1.3g) am I on the right stock? :P

4.. Canned beans. what product of canned beans are safe to use, I was under the impression that no canned products are healthy. In this case can I use canned, corn, chickpeas too?

5. The ratio to eat (just assume from Discussions) is 1 (starch) :2 (veggies)I haven't cook anything like Legumes, millets, Barley, black beans, wheat, I just know Rice, Corn, Oats and potatoes  I know I have some homework to do... Can I use these until my books arrived? Like Oats for breakfast, corn or Quinoa (know this for 1 week hahaha) for lunch and dinner brown rice or potatoes, all with loads of added veggies?

I do apologize if this seems like silly questions :D .

Thanks in advance!

Tanja

Welcome!

1. For sweetening oatmeal I like to use mashed bananas and applesauce, or berries and peaches when they're in season. You could also just use a small amount of sugar, honey, or maple syrup. Avoid artificial sweeteners.

2. You can still lose weight eating bread, just make sure it is made with whole grains, has no oil, and preferably no seeds or nuts as they are very high in fat.

3. Many vegetable stocks in tablet form contain oil, which needs to be avoided. You can buy oil-free stock in aseptic packages or try making your own.

4. I prefer cooking my own beans and freezing them because it's so much cheaper, but Eden is often mentioned as a good brand. Although there was a recent controversy with the amount of iodine in them, I believe the company is addressing that.

5. There is no ratio of starch to veggies suggested on the regular McDougall program. Just have starches as your main dish and eat until you're full (and no more). The Maximum Weight Loss version suggests a default ratio of 2/3 starch to 1/3 veggies.

While waiting for the books to arrive you can read lots of detailed information about the program for free here on this web site. That should clear up a lot of questions as people on this forum are doing various different things that aren't all necessarily part of the original McDougall program.

Good luck! - Julie

Dr Greger did a video comparing sweeteners. the only sweetener he gave a green light to was ZSweet. Dr Greger thinks it is fine:

Artificial is artificial. Why even go there?

Thanx to everyone who replied and the advice, I do not use artificial sweeteners and use honey and some cinnamon to give taste to my oats. So far its going good but the books can't be shipped to me or the shipping fees cost twice as the books, so I have to wait for my friend that comes back from holiday (US) so I can start reading the books, she was kind and will 'ship' the books to me :D . Cant wait!!!

Thanx for the nutrition facts, its WOW!
