Hey Folks,

I'm Cara, a nanny and private chef in Oregon. I've been an on-again/off-again vegan for 15 years, and although I've flirted with Dr. McDougall's books and ideas in the past, I've never just fully "gone for it".

I don't want to diet anymore. I've struggled with the same 30 pounds since my teen years (I'm 35 now) and I'm exhausted from the lose/gain cycle that comes with dieting and overeating. I don't want to obsess over calories or points or protein or carbs, but I also don't want to just say "the hell with it" and live my life uncomfortably overweight. I want to make a change now that will become "the normal way" for me.

Since reading The Starch Solution (so awesome!) a few weeks ago, I've been easing into cooking without oils--a major challenge for a chef, but I'm realizing it actually CAN be done without sacrificing too much flavor and texture! Also, I've been drinking much less alcohol (my husband and I are very social and we eat & drink out several times a week). This whole transition period has been a little more challenging than I expected, and I've only lost 2 or 3 pounds, but I keep reminding myself that this isn't a diet! It's a permanent change I'm trying to make--there won't ever be an "end" or a time where I'll be "done with the plan", you know? This is my life now--my better life.

So...here I go! I'm so glad these boards exist, I feel much less alone in my efforts. I'll be starting a log in the Journal section, hope to see you there...

I haven't been following the regular plan perfectly, so I know the weight will come off soon. As for the MWL plan (excellent suggestion), I'm saving that for the last 7 or 8 pounds, I know I'll need it!

Cara, check out your local Whole Foods Health Starts Here program. I just went to a cooking class there and they show you how easy it is. Also if you are near Portland, VegNw offers cooking classes too. I have found things taste much better without the oils. I am just a month into this and besides my cookie cravings, its been great.
