I am having sushi tomorrow for lunch with a good friend, and it's a buffet. They do not have a menu for lunch aside from the buffet.

Being a vegetarian, I know they have several vegetable rolls and typically there will be at least one that is vegan and without avocado. Sometimes they are even brown rice! I also typically eat the miso soup and their salad.

Does anyone have any insight into what is typically in the ginger dressing? It's orange, gritty and seems very fresh. I can toss on a little soy sauce if there's something unfriendly in that. How about the soup? Is there anything I should be concerned about with the soup?

This will be the first time I've ventured anywhere that I can't simply order steamed vegetable or a baked potato. Is there anything I'm not thinking about that I should be conscious of? I want to be prepared, and try to know what I will need to ask about before I get there.

By the way -- I'm really, really excited about weighing in tomorrow. It seems like people have finally noticed I'm losing weight this week. :)

Generally miso soup is ok. It is miso mixed with water or seaweed
broth (it could also be bonito broth, fish flakes). Sometimes they add small chunks of tofu which is easy to avoid if you don't want any.
I suspect the orange dressing has sesame seeds and or sesame oil in it. The sushi restaurant that I go uses oil in their dressing.
Some sushi restaurants put mayonnaise in their rolls, and some rolls are filled with tempura (deep fried) sweet potato. Otherwise, a veggie sushi roll should be fine. There might be edamame (green soybean),but you would probably want to avoid them if doing MWL.
Unfortunately restaurants differ so much in their food prep so it's best to ask.
Hope you have a wonderful lunch with your friend! And congrats on the weightloss. :-D

Yes--the dressing will have oil in it. Skip that!

I usually order a veg roll (w/ avocado) and a cucumber roll. Yummy!! We now have a "build your own" sushi place near where I work and they have brown rice and I can get a roll w/out avocado (plus they have more interesting ingredients than Japanese restaurants do). I sometimes get the avocado for special occasions. :)

Miso is VERY salty but if that's not a problem, it should be OK.

Thanks for the help! I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something not-so-obvious I was overlooking. I'll let you know how it goes.

The local Buffett will let you make a special roll if you ask. My favorite is asparagus. Yum!

Thank you all!

I did pretty well, although one roll I chose to eat had avocado in it so the meal wasn't MWL entirely. The other veggie rolls either had cream cheese or mayo in/on them. I had large salad with a wasabi and soy sauce mixture over it, a bowl of miso soup, the roll with cucumber, avocado and carrot and a couple of pieces of a "dessert" roll that was sweet potato and pear. I was pretty happy with how I did, although I did eat more than I needed. Progress, not perfection, I suppose.
