it is a motivating factor since if you don't walk it.............

I always wished my dog would try and keep up instead of try to smell everything

I agree! Furthermore, why do my two always want to sniff on opposite sides of the road. I stand in the middle holding on to the leashes. I'm sure I look like a scarecrow.
