Sorry I'm late in posting my minutes. 320 minutes of walking this week. I would have more, but my dependable workout buddy (husband) isn't always dependable when it gets cold outside. :? So I missed 4 days this week. :( Guess its back to going alone again like the old days...

The hotel manager measured the snow accumulation on the sidewalk out front said it showed 22 inches from Wednesday and Thursday. We’re expecting at least another 6-8 inches today but then it should be clear and cold starting tonight so we plan to take off down the trail tomorrow. We’re prepared to hike and even camp in snowy sub-zero conditions although the plan is to make it to Crested Butte, Colorado and stay in one of the ski lodges on Saturday night. Perhaps we’ll pick up some cross country skis. It might be faster than snowshoeing. Janice & I have been playing Wii Tennis in the hotel lounge to pass the time while we’re snow bound. Here are a few snaps from the Leadville area.

In this section of the American Discovery Trail the trail divides in places for the walkers and bikers since some of the trails are just not suitable for bike riding. We considered taking the bike route, which is actually along the highways, because the elevation is lower and we were concerned about being able to locate the trail under the snow. But then we considered the fact that we’d be walking in the piles of snow created by the road plows and splashed by cars with water from the melting snow and in the end we hit the trails and the high country.

I am so glad we did. It was gorgeous. Walking on pristine snow in a winter wonderland. Truly magical. We had GPS and maps and cell phones and all the right equipment and clothes so I felt safe and we just had a blast. If you are interested in trying snowshoeing, here are a couple of very brief YouTube videos that might give you a better idea of what it’s like.

And here are a few snaps from yesterday. Next time it snows, I strongly suggest you bundle up and get out there. So fun and it really makes you appreciate a warm bed & a hot cup of tea, I can tell you that. :)

I’m glad to be down out of the snow. The elevation here is 4597 feet, nearly 6000 feet lower then Leadville at 10,430 feet. It was below freezing last night here in Grand Junction but it’s supposed to get up to 65° today which will feel balmy to me. Janice took a shuttle to the airport this morning to head back to Indianapolis. I’m so glad I had someone to share my snowstorm adventure with. I’ve got some miles to get done today so I best get to stepping. I’ll leave you with a snap of my new friend Jojo, and American Eskimo dog who belonged to another guest at the motel. :)

Reminder: Please post your exercise minutes/miles tomorrow, Thursday. Thanks.

I’m just spitting distance from the Utah border. Then I’ll just have 3 states, Utah, Nevada, & California left to walk across. I might just be home for Christmas. :)

I’ve spent most of the past two days on this bike trail and I’ve only seen two bikes and no hikers. Not a lot of water sources on this part of the trail and I’m carrying my winter gear so this is the heaviest my pack has been for the entire trip. Luckily the 3300 miles I’ve walked so far has toughened me up some. The tip of one of my trekking poles broke yesterday afternoon. It telescopes so I just adjusted the height so the broken pole is about the same length as the other one. I’ll get that replaced in Moab. At least with my winter tent I’m not using the trekking poles as tent supports like I do with my summer tarp/tent. Here are a few snaps from the Kokopelli Bike Trail and the Colorado National Monument.

Hey Garbanzo! Your last photos brought back some memories. We used to live in SLC and drove through southern UT on our way to TX.

I am reporting for four people. We all had busy, messed-up schedules so our totals are down this week.

JuJuBee in CA did 400 minutes.

The other three of us did 450 minutes of daily evening walking.

My DS13 did 60 minutes of horseback riding.

400 + 450 + 60 = 910 minutes TOTAL.

Happy trails! :)

Hi. I walked 7 miles this week. Yesterday it was hard because it was foggy and damp and the cold seeped into my bones. I do not like fog, although my husband, who has lived in San Francisco, doesn't mind it, and he kept me company, and our dog seems to like every walk, no matter what the weather.
