Hold the phone Vegan-Vegan! This only holds true for the grape-nuts Fit version of the cereal. The regular is still the same.

We pulled it from our programs last month.

No, the regular Grape Nuts does contain the isolated soy protein. It never used to have it. Not sure when the change was made but the regular Grape Nuts does have it in the ingredient list.

It will be interesting if walmart, etc will keep theirs the same.

I couldn't eat grape-nuts for a few years because of an intolerance to something in it (and I grew to not miss it). A few months ago I tested it out and once again it agreed with me. In fact the "fit" version was on the shelf at that time--I thought they had quit making the original. There were very few boxes of the "original."

I read labels fairly regularly, but when you buy something all the time, it's easy to miss "new formula" when they first change something or apparently in this case, they just slipped in the change. That, or I live under a rock:-)

Seems to be a great example of corporate America pulling a fast one!

I like to use the Walmart version as a topping on my oatmeal to give it a little crunch.

I just went to my local Krogers and the "new" Grape-Nuts definitely has the ISP in it. However the Kroger brand "Nutty Nuggets" still has the original ingredients and is 30% cheaper to boot...We'll see in a month or so if they too change their formula.

God, that's terrible. I hate that Americans are so nuts about food.

I ate Grape Nuts once when I was a kid and the weird malty flavor put me off in a huge way -- and I haven't had it since. I can still remember the flavor, though. Eek. But it's awful to see a classic recipe ruined by the Insane Fad of the Month.

I checked at my local grocery store tonight and both the Grape-Nuts and the Nutty Nuggets are still legal ingredients. At least, for now!

Jeff said use this

A better choice would be Food For Life Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Whole Grain Cereal.

I used to use the Safeway brand. I haven't had any in a long time. Maybe I'll stock up on a couple boxes to have for crunchy toppings for things.

I used to make a great fruit pie crust with it, but haven't done that in quite a while.

Added protein is indeed the new marketing trend. It lends a "health halo" to packaged products.

A while back added bran was the thing. (I believe Michael Pollan talked about the Year of Oat Bran.)

Then omega-3 hit the scene and proliferated wildly.

Now, it's protein, again. (Nevermind that the typical meat-and-dairy eating American is probably ingesting double his/her protein requirement.)

Rule of thumb: Avoid products making health claims.

Sometimes I buy Uncle Sam Cereal for a change from steel cut oats type of oatmeal.

Uncle Sam cereal - 7 ingredients, less than 1 gram of sugar, and has 10 grams of fiber. I buy it Trader Joes but you can even buy it online.

steel cut oats - easy way to prepare - I think I copied this from someone on this forum awhile back.

no long cooking ;

before going to bed [ or 1 hour before you want to eat the oats ] you
put 1 (or 2 or 3 or 4 ) cups of steel cut oats in a saucepan & add BOILING WATER - enough to cover by an inch - and then stir well & cover. use a big sauce pan for big quantities ... the day after - or even one hour after - the grain is soaked and doubled in size you can eat it!

very easy ! just warm up the amount you want to eat in the microwave for few seconds and add anything you want..

Very disappointing. I don't eat GrapeNuts for cereal but use them occasionally for a crunchy topping/coating. I will have to stock up before this change crosses the Atlantic. I'm sure the GrapeNuts I buy are probably imported.

When the Box Says 'Protein,' Shoppers Say 'I'll Take It'

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/box-says- ... 00747.html

That explains the change in Grape Nuts.

Oatmeal is still the cheapest cereal.
I buy in bulk and its only 89 cents a pound.
